The Jade Emperor's birthday (天公誕) is said to be the ninth day of the first lunar month. On this day, Taoist temples hold a Jade Emperor Ritual (拜天公, bài Tiān Gōng, literally "heaven worship") during which priests and lay people bow down, burn incense, and make food offerings.

Jade Emperor and Heaven Worship

According to Taoism (Daoism), he lives in the 33rd heaven and rules 33 heavens; he is therefore the king of heaven. He is a vegetarian. To celebrate his birthday, the Chinese prepare three bundles of long noodles, three teacups with green tea, five kinds of fruits and six kinds of different dried vegetables to worship the Jade Emperor. But people also prepare five animal sacrifices, different sweet cakes and a turtle cake (turtle is a symbol of longevity) on a different table for the Jade Emperor's guardian soldiers.

To show sincerity, many people take a bath on the 8th lunar night, and then wait until the first minute of the 9th lunar day to start the ceremony with their clean bodies. After the ceremony, the Chinese people set off firecrackers. That is why we can hear the scattered sound of midnight firecrackers at sunrise.

His temple is crowded on Chinese New Year's Day on the night of the 8th lunar day for people unable to hold the worship event at home. For the same purpose, Chinese people always pray for better luck, safety, health, love or money when they visit the temple.
