Today, the Japanese celebrate the New Year. Wishes are made by saying “yoi o-toshi o” (よいおとしを, lit. “happy new year”) until December 31, “akemashite omedetō” (あけましておめでとう, lit. “congratulations at dawn [of this new year]") from January 1st.
