The Stenia was a party of Demeter and Persephone held three days before the Thesmophoria.
Stenia in honor of Demeter and Persephone
Little is known about this festival, except that it was celebrated exclusively by women and that ritualized jokes, mock obscenity and insults would have featured prominently. It would have coincided with the beginning of the ritual purification of women who would celebrate the Thesmophoria.
This may also have been the time when other women, called "the scoopers", went to collect the offerings for the Thesmophoria from the pits into which they were thrown at the Skirophoria.
