Nyilog or Nyinlog is the celebration of the winter solstice in Bhutan which is observed as a public holiday. It is celebrated on the seventh day of the eleventh month of the Bhutanese calendar. The Bhutanese calendar is a variant of the calendar tibetan lunisolar. Therefore, this holiday occurs in the northern hemisphere in December or January. It is customary to celebrate on January 2.
Nyinlog, the renewal of the sun in Bhutan
Nyin long can be translated from the Dzongkha language as "return of the sun". This day is believed to be the most auspicious day of the year. Nyinlog is one of the sixteen public holidays celebrated in Bhutan. The people of Bhutan celebrate this day with feasting and archery.
Bhutanese farmers may feel some sorrow on this day because from the winter solstice onwards, the days will get longer and longer, which means more and more work in the fields.
