Dhanu Sankranti is a festival celebrated by Hindus. It is also known as Dhanu Sankraman. This holiday takes place when the sun passes into the zodiac sign Sagittarius. In the mythology Indian, Sagittarius is also known as Dhanu Rashi. During a Hindu calendar year, the Sun passes through different zodiac signs a total of twelve times. This phenomenon is called Sankrati. This means that there are twelve Sankratis in a Hindu calendar year.

Lord Surya or the Sun God and Lord Jagganath are worshipped on this day. Devotees take a holy bath in rivers like Ganga, Yamuna and Godavari. In Odisha, the month of Pausha is considered to be the month of abundance. After the harvest season, a grand festival is held. A delicacy, Dhanu Muan is prepared from sweetened rice flakes and offered to Lord Jagannath.
A street play is performed on this day, which shows the various incidents from the life of Lord Krishna. One of the episodes is based on Lord Krishna's visit to Mathura to attend the Bow ceremony organized by Kansa who had invited Lord Krishna and Lord Balaram to Mathura on the occasion of Dhanu Yatra with the intention of killing them.
The annual festival of Dhanu Sankranti depicts scenes from the birth of Lord Krishna to the killing of the demon Kansa. Various incidents mentioned in the Bhagavad Purana are enacted. The locals participate in the play with great enthusiasm. The Dhanu Yatra is held during this period.
On this day, Lord Jagannath is worshipped along with Lord Sun, especially in Orissa. The Sun God is worshipped with water and flowers early in the morning, just after sunrise to receive blessings. Devotees fast on this day for happiness and fortune in their life.
Devotees begin the Dhanu Yatra festival from the sixth day of Pausha month at Shukla Paksha which continues till Purnima of Pausha month. A special Prasad is prepared on this day which includes conical shaped sweet rice flakes to be offered to Lord Jagganath during the puja ceremony.
The 'Bow Ceremony' is depicted in a street play as mentioned in the Bhagwad Purana. Devotees visit Lord Jagganath Temple and Sun Temple to pay homage to them. Dhanu Sankranti is considered auspicious to offer donation and perform ancestral pujas. Apart from charity, one should get involved in Sankraman Japam, holy water bath and Pitru Tarpan.
