The Chalkeia, of Greek ancient : Χαλχεῖα, are religious festivities of the Greece ancient celebrated in Athens on the 30th of the month of Pyanepsion. They seem to have begun just after the end of the Hephaistias or then joined together. They were dedicated to the god Hephaestus and the goddess Athena Ergane (worker).
Chalkeia of Athens
In the early days the festivals could have had an agrarian origin but very quickly they became a festival of artisans and more particularly of blacksmiths of whom the two deities were the protectors. In addition, the festival also evokes the myths founders of Athens since the two divinities Hephaestus and Athena are united in the myth of the birth of Erichthonios, one of the first kings of the city.
It was during this festival that the peplos offered to the goddess during the Panathenaia the following summer began to be woven.
