In ancient Rome the Divalia (Or Angeronalia) are a Roman religious festival celebrated on in honor of the goddess Angerona. On the day of the festival, the date of the winter solstice, the pontiffs celebrated sacrifices in the temple of Volupia, the goddess of contentment, where there was a statue of Angerona, depicting her with her index finger placed on her closed mouth.
Divalia or Angeronalia, the goddess who guides through the darkness of winter
Angerona was a very ancient goddess who comes from the early days of Rome. Originally, she was the goddess who heals pain and sadness, who presides over difficult passages, especially that of the winter solstice when the sun must force a narrow passage through the darkness that seems to dominate, or who freed the Romans from angina (by a play on words on the root ofangina which means “narrow”).
She is also the protector of Rome and the guardian of the sacred name of the city, which was not to be pronounced so as not to be revealed to the enemy; it was even thought that Angerona was her name.
In its modern sense, it is related to Ops, Acca Larentia and Dea Dia; it is also the goddess of the winter solstice and the return of the sun.
