In ancient Rome, March was the traditional start of the campaign season, and the Tubilustrium was a ceremony to prepare the army for war. The ceremony involved sacred trumpets called tubae.

Tubilustrium, the beginning of military campaigns

The festival took place on March 23, the last day of the Quinquatria festival held in honor of the Roman god Mars and Nerine, a Sabine goddess. The event was held again on May 23.

The ceremony took place in Rome in a building called the Shoemakers' Hall (atrium sutorium) and involved the sacrifice of a sheep. Romans who did not attend the ceremony would remember the occasion by seeing the Salii dancing in the streets of the city.
