Parinirvana Day is an annual festival, observed on February 15 in some Mahayana Buddhist countries, commemorating the death of the Buddha (Siddhartha Gautama) when he reached the age of 80.
Parinirvana, the death of Buddha
When the Buddha died, Buddhists believe he entered a state called Parinirvana which means endless Nirvana.
When a Buddhist attains Nirvana, he or she will never be reborn again. The Buddhist has reached a state of complete understanding, where no more suffering can be felt. Mahayana Buddhism teaches that Nirvana can be attained by anyone, when all desire and suffering have disappeared.
Buddhists can celebrate this day by meditating or visiting Buddhist temples or monasteries.
In monasteries, this day is treated as a social occasion. Food is prepared and some people bring gifts such as money, household items or clothing.
This day is important for Buddhists today as they reflect on their lives and how they can work to achieve Nirvana. They remember friends or relatives who have recently died and reflect on the fact that death is a part of everyone's life.
