ToggleIn short
The feast of Saint Leocadia of Toledo appears as December 9 in the historical martyrologies of the 9th century.
Saint Leocadia of Toledo
She was buried in the local cemetery, near the Tagus, where a cult soon arose around her tomb. It is believed that a basilica was built in the 4th century, improved in 618 by Sisebut. The 7th century saw the flowering of her cult.
During the reign of Alfonso X of Castile, the prison where she was allegedly incarcerated still bore evidence of her habitation. A contemporary witness reports: "There still existed, and we touched it, a sign of the cross engraved in the stone because the martyr constantly touched the walls with her fingers this sign of our redemption.
In the 9th century, his relics were moved during the persecutions of Abd ar-Rahman II. They were transferred to Oviedo; Alfonso the Chaste had a basilica built there in his honor. In the 11th century, a Count of Hainaut arrived in Spain on a pilgrimage to Compostela. He fought alongside Alfonso VI of Castile in the campaigns of the Reconquista, and received as a reward the relics of Saint Leocadia and Saint Sulpice. Thus, his relics were taken out of Spain.
His relics were known to have been located at the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Ghislain, in present-day Belgium.
Her relics were venerated there by Philip the Fair and Joanna of Castile, who recovered a tibia of the saint in Toledo. The abbey of Saint-Ghislain suffered depredations during the wars of the 16th century. Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, 3rd Duke of Alba tried in vain to save the rest of her relics. However, a Jesuit named Miguel Hernández, originally from the province of Toledo, found her relics in 1583. After many travels, he brought them to Rome in 1586.
They were brought to Valencia by sea, and finally brought to Toledo from Cuenca. Philip II of Spain presided over a solemn ceremony commemorating his relics in Toledo in April 1587.
