In parts of Ukraine, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Poland, Russia and Romania, a superstitious belief exists that the eve of St. Andrew's Day is particularly auspicious to the magic which reveals the future husband of a young woman or which binds a future husband to her. This day was thought to mark the start of the most popular period for vampire activity, which would last until St. George's Day (April 22).
In Poland, the Andrzejki holiday is celebrated on the night of November 29 to 30. Traditionally, the holiday was only observed by young, unmarried girls, although today, young men and women join the celebration to see their future. The main ceremony involved pouring hot wax from a candle through the hole of a key into cold water.
In Romania, it is customary for young women to put 41 grains of wheat under their pillow before going to sleep, and if they dream that someone comes to steal their grains, it means that they will get married in the year next. Also in other parts of the country, young women light an Easter candle and bring it, at midnight, to a fountain. They ask Saint Andrew to let them see their future husband.

In Póvoa de Varzim, an ancient fishing town in northern Portugal, Cape Santo André (Portuguese for Saint Andrew) is a place that shows signs of Romanization and of probably earlier importance, with hints of paintings from the 'stone Age. Near the cape there are small depressions in a rock, a mysterious stone, which people believe to be the footprints of Saint Andrew.
The Saint-André chapel is of probable medieval origin, referenced in 1546 and in earlier documents. It is the burial place of drowned fishermen found on the cape. The fishermen also requested the intervention of the saint for better catches. Single girls wanting to get married would throw a small stone onto the roof of the chapel, hoping it would lodge.
Due to pagan syncretism, it is also associated with white magic to the present day. It was common to see groups of fishermen, holding lamps in their hands, making a pilgrimage to the Cape Chapel along the beach on St. Andrew's Eve. They believed that Saint Andrew fished, in the depths, for the souls of the drowned. Those who have not visited Santo André in life should make the pilgrimage like a corpse.
