New Year's Eve, towards a Christian Roman Empire
Among Western churches, the feast is celebrated on the anniversary of the death of Saint Sylvester, December 31, a date which, since the adoption of the Gregorian calendar, coincides with St. Sylvester's Day. For these Christian denominations, it liturgically marks the seventh day of Christmastide. The Eastern Orthodox churches celebrate the feast of Sylvester on a different day from the Western churches, namely on January 2.
During the reign of Pope Sylvester I, many of the magnificent Christian churches were built, including the Basilica of St. John Lateran, the Church of Santa Croce, and the Old Basilica of St. Peter, among others. During the papacy of St. Sylvester, the Nicene Creed, which is recited by communicants of the vast majority of the world's Christian denominations, was formulated. Sylvester is said to have healed, in the name of Christ, the Emperor Constantine the Great of leprosy. After his death, Sylvester was buried on December 31 in the Catacomb of Priscilla.
Nowadays, New Year's Eve coincides with New Year's Eve.
