Pohela Falgun, the first day of spring

Thousands of people, especially the youth across Bangladesh, welcome the arrival of spring with beautiful colourful 'bashonti' (yellow or orange coloured) dresses, especially yellow or red panjabis and saris and present flowers to their soul mates as a token of their deep love for each other.

Dressed in yellow outfits with flower brunches in their buns and hands, hundreds of young girls and boys throng the Bakultala at the premises of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Dhaka (DU), the focal point of the festival to celebrate spring, to sing songs, recite poems and dance. Ramna Park, Rabindra Sarobar and Hatirjheel attract huge crowds on this day.

The entire DU campus including the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC), Faculty of Arts, Curzon Hall, University Mall (Mall Chattar) and Amar Ekeushy Granthamela Complex transforms into the best place to spend time with friends, family members and loved ones on the day.

Jatiya Boshonto Utshab Udjapan Parishad has been organizing the main program of the day for about two decades. The platform organizes different programs including song rendering and poem recitation apart from the regular programs.

As spring has arrived with flowers and new leaves on the trees, nature is becoming more and more fresh and colorful that touches the hearts and minds of all ages.

Spring has been described as the king of all seasons in poetry for its extraordinary beauty of nature. After the dryness of winter, new leaves start coming out and nature adorns the branches with new colorful flowers like Shimul, Polash and Marigold indicating the message of the arrival of spring.
