Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti (also known as Shiv Jayanti) is a festival and public holiday in the Indian state of Maharashtra. The festival is celebrated on 19 February (Julian date), celebrating the birth anniversary of Shivaji Maharaj, the first Chhatrapati and founder of the Maratha Empire. Some people celebrate the day according to the Hindu calendar in Maharashtra.
Shiv Jayanti, the birthday of the founder of the Maratha Empire
Shivaji Bhonsale I (19 February 1630 – 3 April 1680), also called Chhatrapati Shivaji, was an Indian ruler and a member of the Bhonsle Maratha clan. Shivaji carved out an enclave in the declining Adilshahi Sultanate of Bijapur that formed the genesis of the Maratha Empire. In 1674, he was formally crowned Chhatrapati of his kingdom in Raigad.
During his lifetime, Shivaji engaged in alliances and hostilities with the Mughal Empire, the Golkonda Sultanate, the Bijapur Sultanate, and European colonial powers. Shivaji's military forces expanded the Maratha sphere of influence, capturing and building forts, and forming a Maratha navy.
Shivaji established a competent and progressive civil rule with well-structured administrative organizations. He revived ancient Hindu political traditions, court conventions and promoted the use of Marathi and Sanskrit languages, replacing Persian at court and in administration.
Shivaji's legacy was to vary depending on the observer and the time, but nearly two centuries after his death, he began to assume increasing importance with the emergence of the Indian independence movement, as many Indian nationalists elevated him to the status of a proto-nationalist and hero of the Hindus.
