Thaipusam (தைப்பூசம்) is a Hindu festival mainly by the Tamil community during the full moon of the Tamil month of Thai (January–February). This festival is also known as Thaipooyam or Thaippooyam in the Malayalam language. This commemorates both the birth of Murugan, also called Subrāhmanya, the youngest son of the god Shiva and his wife Parvati, as well as the occasion on which Parvati gave Murugan a spear, so that he could defeat the demon Surapadman.
Thaipusam, Murugan's victory
Skanda (or Murugan) was created during one of the battles between the Asura (demonic spirits) and the Deva (gods). At one point, the gods were repeatedly defeated by the Asura. The Deva were unable to resist the onslaught of the forces deployed by the Asura.
Desperate, they then pray to Shiva to give them a leader capable, through his heroic leadership, of giving them victory against the Asura. Shiva granted their request, creating the mighty warrior Skanda, drawing from his own power (Achintya Shakti). Skanda then took command of the gods, and knew how to give them the impetus necessary to defeat the forces of the Asura.
