On this day, the Athenians celebrated Dionysia ta astika. This festival dates from the 6th century BCE, instituted by the Tyrants. Legend has it that the Athenians were punished with a genital disease for having rejected the god Dionysus. They had to cut off their parts and organize a procession carrying a phallus to make amends. The procession became annual to keep the favor of the god. #mythology #myth #legend #calendar #Dionysus #Athens #13March
