Trndez (the fire festival or Chandleur from February 13 evening to February 14) is another popular festival Armenian which dates back to a period before the Christian era. It is linked to the worship of fire and the sun and announces the coming of spring and fertility.
Trndez, a celebration of ancient times
“Tearnendarach” means “to come before God.” People also call it “Terndez, Trndez, Trntes,” variations that translate to “May God be with you.”
The Armenian Church celebrates Tearnentarach on February 14, 40 days after the birth of Christ which occurs on January 6 in the Armenian tradition.
This popular festival dates back to well before the Christian era and is one of the few pagan celebrations still preserved. It is linked to the worship of fire and the sun and announces the coming of spring.
After the adoption of Christianity, the holiday changed a little. It began to be celebrated in honor of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple, and the main participants are now young men and women – newlyweds, or those who intend to marry.
After the festive liturgy, a rite of blessing for the newlyweds is performed in all churches. Bonfire is one of the important attributes of the holiday. Participants must jump over the bonfire so that happiness enters their homes.
Then the party is followed by traditional songs and dances around the fire. At the end, with the flames of the sacred fire the participants light candles and take them home.
