The Harvest Festival (豊年祭, Hōnensai) is a fertility festival celebrated every year on March 15 in Japan. Hōnen means prosperous year in Japanese, implying a rich harvest, while a matsuri is a festival. The Hōnen festival and ceremony celebrate the blessings of a bountiful harvest and all kinds of prosperity and fertility.

Hōnensai, the fertility festival

The Shinto deities worshipped are Mitoshi and the female deity Tamahime. Mitoshi is the son of the male Shinto deity Toshigami or known to locals as Ōtoshi and grandson of the Shinto deity Susanoo. Tamahime is a princess and the daughter of Ō'arata, the matriarch of her husband Take'inadane's Owari clan who was blessed with two sons and four daughters. After her husband's death, she returned to her hometown Arata (located near Komaki), encouraged to cultivate with the help of her father Ō'arata, honoring and fulfilling his accomplishments.

The most famous of these festivals takes place in the town of Komaki, just north of Nagoya City. The main features of the festival are Shinto priests playing musical instruments, a parade of participants in ceremonial dress, unlimited sake, and a wooden phallus.

The 280 kg, 2.5 meter long, 200-250 year old Japanese cypress wood phallus called youbutsu (陽物, lit. male object) or ō-owase-gata (大男茎形, lit. large phallus shape) which is transported from a shrine called Shinmei Sha (even years) in Komaki on a large hill or from Kumano-sha Shrine (odd years), to a shrine called Tagata Jinja in Komaki, Tagata, Aichi Prefecture.

The festival begins with a celebration and preparation at 10:00 a.m. at Tagata Jinja, where all kinds of foods and souvenirs (mostly phallus-shaped or related) are sold. Sake is also freely distributed from large wooden barrels. Around 2:00 p.m. everyone gathers at Shinmei Sha for the procession to begin. Shinto priests say prayers and give blessings to the participants and the mikoshi, as well as the large wooden phallus, which must be carried along the parade route.

As the procession descends towards Tagata Jinja, the phallus in its mikoshi is spun furiously before being placed down and further prayers are recited. Everyone then gathers in the square outside Tagata Jinja and awaits the mochi nage, at which time the crowd is showered with small rice cakes that are thrown by officials from raised platforms. The festival ends around 4:30 p.m.
