On the second Sunday in January, a ceremony takes place at Mount Wakakusa around a pyre of herbs called Wakakusa Yamayaki. The monks of the temples of Nara set fire to the dry winter grasses. A torch is first lit at the Kasuga-taisha shrine, then a procession of monks carries it to a small shrine at the foot of the hill. The whole hill is then burned.
